Arrests and Allegations
On Wednesday, July 15, agents from the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested 36-year-old Paweł P., a former employee of the Government Agency for Strategic Reserves (RARS), along with 52-year-old Renata K. and 42-year-old Włodzimierz D., the former heads of the Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego Foundation.
Jacek Dobrzyński confirmed that investigators suspect donations obtained from State Treasury companies were diverted from charitable activities to political ends.
Investigation Into RARS Irregularities
The investigation, launched on December 1, 2023, by the Katowice branch of the National Prosecutor’s Office, focuses on the abuse of power and failure to fulfill duties by RARS officials during procurement processes. The probe was initiated following classified materials from the CBA and reports from the General Inspector of Financial Information.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
To date, 14 individuals have been charged, including former RARS chief Michał Kuczmierowski and Red is Bad creator Paweł Szopa. Prosecutors allege a 91 million euro misuse of subsidies regarding contracts for power generators destined for Ukraine.
Paweł Szopa was deported to Poland from the Dominican Republic in late October 2024 to face charges of money laundering and participation in an organized crime group. Meanwhile, the extradition proceedings for Michał Kuczmierowski in London have been adjourned until September 24.
