On Wednesday, July 15, at the Law and Justice headquarters on Nowogrodzka Street in Warsaw, Jarosław Kaczyński and the leader of the Non-Partisan Local Government movement, Marek Woch, declared their intent to cooperate. Kaczyński stated that the move is designed to ensure the Senate is no longer dominated by left-wing political factions.
The specific format of the collaboration remains under discussion. While Kaczyński indicated a preference for a social committee, he emphasized that broader talks are required and that other partners will share in the decision-making process. He argued that a unified front could better influence legislation, including the proposal of amendments and new content for bills.
Rationalizing the Right-Wing Coalition
Marek Woch defended the partnership by citing the 2023 election results, where his movement and the Confederation party collectively garnered 2.5 million votes but failed to secure any Senate seats due to the strength of the center-left pact led by Donald Tusk and his allies. Woch suggested that this electoral outcome necessitated a more strategic approach to prevent further wasted votes.
Impact on Confederation Plans
The announcement effectively disrupts earlier signals from the Confederation leadership. On July 7, Krzysztof Bosak had expressed openness to a Senate pact with Law and Justice, arguing that a center-left majority in the upper house is detrimental to Poland’s interests.
Future Political Ambitions
Regarding potential cooperation in the Sejm, Woch clarified that the Non-Partisan Local Government movement currently plans to run independently. He addressed recent speculation about his party’s alliances, affirming their status as a grassroots, patriotic movement and stating that future decisions regarding parliamentary participation will be determined as elections approach.
