Russian-Directed Sabotage: 18-Year-Old Ukrainian Indicted for Hate Crimes and Drone Plot

An 18-year-old Ukrainian national faces charges after allegedly committing 47 acts of vandalism against Polish historical sites on behalf of Russian intelligence and plotting a drone attack during a military parade.

Indictment for Vandalism and Historical Desecration

Prosecutors state the suspect was commissioned by Russian services to place slogans glorifying the UPA and Bandera on buildings and memorials. The acts included the desecration of the Ghetto Heroes Monument in Warsaw and the Volhynia Massacre Monument.

Internal Security Agency (ABW) officers and National Prosecutor’s Office investigators documented 47 such offenses committed between November 2024 and August 2025. The man was detained on August 12 and remains in custody following a court order.

Drone Surveillance and Planned Provocation

Authorities also charged the suspect with planning a provocation involving a drone. He intended to fly the device over the presidential vehicle during the Armed Forces Day parade in Warsaw on August 15, 2025.

The suspect reportedly coordinated the purchase of the device, investigated financing methods, and researched the parade route near Wisłostrada. The operation was thwarted due to his timely arrest.

Legal Status and Motivation

Though the 18-year-old initially confessed, he has since retracted his statements and denied the charges. He faces a potential sentence ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment.

Prosecutors indicated the motive was financial rather than ideological. Investigations into other members of the criminal group continue in separate proceedings, focusing on recruitment via messaging apps and crypto-based payments channeled through Russian and Chinese exchanges.

Escalation of Foreign Hostile Activity

The ABW reports that Poland is increasingly a target of a “shadow war” directed by Russia. In 2025, the number of investigations into foreign intelligence activity reached unprecedented levels compared to previous decades.

Currently, 91 individuals are under investigation, with 82 charged with espionage. Recent cases include a criminal cell focused on arson and sabotage, involving both foreign nationals and Polish citizens.
