New Bill Aims to Regulate the Dietitian Profession in Poland

A draft bill submitted to the Sejm proposes establishing the dietitian profession as an independent medical specialty, introducing mandatory professional licensing, a formal chamber of ethics, and stricter educational requirements.

Redefining the Dietitian Profession

Dietitians may soon attain the status of an independent medical profession. The proposed legislation seeks to create a comprehensive regulatory framework, including formal professional credentials and a dedicated self-governing body.

Establishment of the National Chamber of Dietitians

The bill mandates the creation of the National Chamber of Dietitians. This organization will be responsible for maintaining a register of licensed professionals, supervising practice standards, and overseeing professional liability for all practicing dietitians.

Legal Protection of the Professional Title

The legislation restricts the use of the title “dietitian” and associated specialist titles exclusively to individuals who hold a formal license. The bill also introduces penalties for the unauthorized use of these protected professional titles.

New Educational and Qualification Standards

Future practitioners will be required to hold a five-year master’s degree in dietetics. The bill includes transitional provisions to accommodate those who completed previous educational programs, with licensing decisions to be handled by the National Council of Dietitians.

Mandatory Professional Development

The proposal introduces a requirement for continuous professional education. Dietitians will be required to update their skills regularly over five-year cycles and will be entitled to six days of paid professional training leave annually.

Legislative Status

The draft was submitted as a parliamentary initiative by a group of MPs from the Poland 2050 party. The document is currently in the initial stages of the legislative process and remains subject to potential amendments.
