Defense Minister Warns of Russian False-Flag Provocations Using Ukrainian Drones

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz warns that Russia is escalating hybrid threats, including potential false-flag operations involving captured Ukrainian drones, and urges vigilance across NATO’s eastern flank.

Escalating Hybrid Threats

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the threat from Russia remains extremely high and is steadily escalating across multiple domains, including cyberspace. He emphasized that the government maintains constant readiness to counter these persistent challenges.

The Minister noted that Polish and Swedish jets intercepted Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea three times in the past week alone. These actions are seen as deliberate probes of Western air defense systems, critical infrastructure, and GPS signal integrity.

Countering Sabotage and False-Flag Operations

Polish security services, including the Internal Security Agency and the Military Counterintelligence Service, are actively thwarting sabotage attempts within the country. The Minister highlighted that these arrests prove Russian tactics remain aggressive and evolving.

Kosiniak-Kamysz specifically warned that Russia has captured a significant number of Ukrainian drones and may use them to conduct provocations under a “false flag.” He stressed that Poland must remain fully prepared for such deceptive operations.

Security Committee Deliberations

A meeting of the Council of Ministers’ Security Committee is scheduled for Tuesday, July 21, at 8:00 AM. The potential use of Ukrainian drones for provocations will be a central topic, alongside discussions on strengthening cybersecurity and protecting critical infrastructure.

The Minister reaffirmed that the threat is shared by the Baltic states, Finland, and Romania. He concluded that Poland stands firmly by its NATO solidarity obligations, expecting mutual commitment from its allies in the event of an attack.
