Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski Under Prosecution Scrutiny Over NFZ Billing Irregularities

Prosecutors are investigating former Southern Hospital department head Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski following an official notification from the National Health Fund regarding fraudulent medical procedure billing discovered during a 2025 audit.

Prosecution of a Former Department Head

Dark clouds have gathered over Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski, the former head of the Department of General and Proctological Surgery at Southern Hospital. The Warsaw-Praga District Prosecutor’s Office has received a formal notification regarding potential criminal activity by the doctor.

The report, filed by the President of the National Health Fund (NFZ) on July 8, stems from the findings of a 2025 audit of the hospital’s surgical department. The audit specifically examined the validity of services provided between January 1 and December 31, 2024.

NFZ Audit Reveals Financial Overbilling

The audit concluded that the surgery department incorrectly billed medical procedures to the NFZ. Specifically, the facility reportedly billed “medium” and endoscopic lower gastrointestinal procedures as more expensive “major” endoscopic treatments for inflammatory bowel disease.

Data suggests that over 130 proctological patients were treated under this misclassification in 2024. Consequently, the NFZ determined that the department was overpaid by approximately 1.1 million PLN.

NFZ Recovery and Reporting Process

Jakub Gołąb from the NFZ central office confirmed that the audit occurred between June 17 and September 5, 2025. The fund has already recovered the overpaid amount of 1.1 million PLN plus interest through a deduction from hospital settlements.

The official notification to the prosecutor’s office was submitted on July 8, 2026. Authorities prioritized this action following subsequent disclosures, including public statements made by Dr. Jędrzejewski on June 23, 2026.

Procedural Shifts and Ongoing Investigations

The case has been transferred to the Warsaw-Praga District Prosecutor’s Office to ensure impartiality. Dr. Jędrzejewski was previously questioned as a witness regarding separate allegations he raised about medical malpractice at the hospital’s emergency department.

The Warsaw Prosecutor’s Office is simultaneously handling two other investigations related to Southern Hospital, involving allegations of fraud and abuse of power by public officials, following reports regarding the high earnings and preferential treatment of certain individuals at the facility.
