Financial Support for Joint Conditions
Knee pain, spinal degeneration, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often impose severe financial burdens due to rising rehabilitation and private medical costs. Many patients remain unaware that they can receive financial assistance from the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) if their condition limits their daily independence.
Eligibility and the Support Need Level
Eligibility is determined by the Support Need Level (PPW) scale, which ranges from 0 to 100 points. To qualify, an applicant must score at least 70 points. Previous program iterations had higher thresholds, but current regulations allow more patients with degenerative conditions or arthritis to apply.
Debunking the Need for Constant Care
A common misconception is that support is reserved only for bedridden individuals. In reality, a moderate disability certificate—the most common status in the Polish system—serves as a sufficient baseline for those with objective physical impairments that cause partial loss of independence.
2026 Payment Tiers
Monthly payments are calculated based on the social pension, which is currently 1,978.49 PLN gross. Beneficiaries receive between 40% and 220% of this amount depending on their PPW score. Payments range from 791.40 PLN for those scoring 70–74 points to 4,352.70 PLN for those reaching 95–100 points.
The Two-Stage Application Procedure
The process is two-fold and strictly sequential. Applicants must first secure an official disability status and a point-based assessment from the Provincial Team for Disability Adjudication (WZON). Only after receiving this decision can they submit an application for the benefit to ZUS.
Procedural Requirements for 2026
ZUS acts solely as the paying agent; applications submitted before obtaining the WZON point assessment will be rejected. Furthermore, all applications must be submitted electronically through designated official channels, as traditional paper forms are no longer accepted.
