Poland Joins Elite Tier of IRIS2 Satellite Program

Poland has officially signed an agreement to participate in the European Union’s IRIS2 secure satellite constellation project, investing nearly 600 million euros from the National Recovery Plan to bolster national communications infrastructure.

A Strategic Investment in Security

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius signed the agreement on Tuesday. The project aims to provide a completely independent and secure communication system for government institutions and national security services.

Minister Kierwiński noted that this system is a direct response to modern threats, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, hybrid warfare, and natural disasters. The initiative will ensure full, autonomous communication capabilities for top state officials and critical agencies.

Poland as a European Communication Hub

By contributing approximately 10 percent of the project’s total value, Poland secures its position as one of the six primary stakeholders in the IRIS2 program, alongside France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Luxembourg. The country is slated to become a central hub for secure communications across the continent.

Full system integration is expected between 2031 and 2032, with initial capabilities coming online as early as 2029. The infrastructure will feature quantum encryption technology to ensure the highest standards of data security and communication resilience.

Industrial Opportunities and Technical Scope

The program offers significant development prospects for Poland’s nearly 400 space industry firms. The project involves a mix of satellites across MEO and LEO orbits, along with a “Point of Presence” gateway that will serve as a regional hub for Nordic and Baltic countries.

Deputy Interior Minister Tomasz Szymański emphasized that beyond the government-specific (GovSat) components, Poland will have the ability to commercialize signal capacity. This provides a strategic lever for the country to negotiate and manage secure connectivity requirements across the region.

It is designed to provide secure, interference-resistant satellite connectivity to public administrations, defense sectors, and citizens across the European Union.
