Dobry Start Program: 1.4 Million Applications Filed as ZUS Processes 300 PLN School Benefit

Dobry Start Program Overview

The Dobry Start program has launched, providing a one-time payment of 300 PLN for every student for September school supplies. Applications can now be submitted, and we remind you how to do it, when parents will receive the money, and the rules under which the program operates.

The beginning of the school year is undoubtedly a period of increased expenses for parents with school-aged children. The Dobry Start benefit can support the household budget, amounting to 300 PLN per student and granted regardless of income, though submitting an application is required.

Application Deadlines and Processing

Applications for the benefit can be submitted from July 1 until the end of November. Currently, ZUS has already received 1.4 million applications.

The payout schedule depends on the month in which the parent submits the application.

Eligibility Requirements for the Benefit

Regardless of parents’ earnings, the benefit is granted for every learning child aged 7 to 20. The upper limit shifts to 24 years if the child has a certified disability. ZUS interprets the age limit by calendar year, meaning graduates of final high school, technical school, and post-secondary school classes are also eligible if they turned 20 or 24 before the start of the school year in a given calendar year.

The right to the benefit can also be obtained by foreigners living in Poland with their children. Non-EU, EFTA, and UK citizens, as well as Ukrainian citizens with UKR status, must generally demonstrate economic activity in the month preceding the application, though regulations provide exceptions for certain individuals.

Applicants covered by these regulations must also provide data regarding border crossings and the legal stay of themselves and their child.

How to Apply for the 300 PLN Benefit

The application can be submitted exclusively in electronic form using one of four channels.

Required data includes a bank account number, e-mail address, and phone number. Information about children and the schools they attend or will attend must also be completed.

Usage of Program Funds

The money can be allocated for textbooks, notebooks, school supplies, PE clothes, footwear, or other equipment needed at school. In practice, however, parents can spend the funds freely, as regulations do not require showing receipts or accounting for expenses incurred.

Demographic Crisis in Polish Education

According to a report prepared by the Social Organizations Network for Education, the Polish school system is facing an unprecedented demographic crisis. Over the next decade, 1,500 to 2,500 facilities—primarily in rural areas and the Świętokrzyskie, Warmian-Masurian, Lublin, and Lubuskie voivodeships—may be closed or transformed into other institutions.

The phenomenon will intensify, with its peak occurring between 2029 and 2034. A key challenge remains ensuring equal access to high-quality education for all children and maintaining school infrastructure in smaller towns.
