Morawiecki and Kaczyński Fail to Reach Agreement as PiS Ultimatum Deadline Looms

Following a high-stakes meeting at PiS headquarters, spokesperson Rafał Bochenek confirmed that talks between Jarosław Kaczyński and Mateusz Morawiecki failed to resolve a key dispute over external associations.

The Meeting at Nowogrodzka

Mateusz Morawiecki arrived at the PiS headquarters on Nowogrodzka Street around noon for discussions with party leader Jarosław Kaczyński. The meeting was scheduled on the day of the ultimatum issued by the party leadership to politicians belonging to external associations, under threat of exclusion from the party.

The controversy stems from a resolution adopted last week by the Law and Justice political committee, requiring every party parliamentarian—under threat of exclusion—to submit a declaration stating they do not belong to “politically active” associations within the party. The ultimatum primarily targets members of the “Rozwój Plus” association founded by Morawiecki.

Bochenek and Muller on the Standoff

PiS spokesperson Rafał Bochenek announced the end of the meeting on X, stating that the talks were constructive but did not lead to a resolution of the core issue, while reminding members that the deadline to submit party affiliation declarations is the end of the day.

Later, MEP and PiS member Piotr Muller published a statement from the “Rozwój Plus” Association, emphasizing that while they want an agreement, there is no consent for signing loyalty pledges, forcing signatures, or submitting humiliating declarations.

Proposals and Deadlines

Muller stated that representatives of the association presented 21 concrete mechanism proposals during Thursday’s meeting to calm the situation and prove their loyalty and responsibility. Meanwhile, MEP Waldemar Buda noted that Mateusz Morawiecki put forward a series of agreement proposals, with the only limit being the continued existence of the Rozwój Plus Association and the withdrawal of humiliating loyalty pledges.

Before the meeting, MP Jacek Sasin stated that about 150 MPs had already submitted declarations of non-membership in political associations, and noted that his own association, “Po pierwsze Polska,” had ceased operations. The final deadline to submit the declarations expires at midnight on Thursday, July 23.
