Marking the 107th anniversary of the police in Poland, National Police Headquarters Chief Gen. Insp. Marek Boroń firmly rejected any efforts to discredit the service or undermine public trust.

This year marks the 107th anniversary of the establishment of the police in Poland. July 24 is celebrated as Police Day, commemorating the founding of the Polish State Police in 1919. The modern police force was established under the Police Act of April 6, 1990, replacing the Citizens’ Militia formed in 1944.

The year 2026 also marks several other anniversaries, including the 95th anniversary of Police Aviation, the 50th anniversary of the “BOA” Central Counter-Terrorist Sub-unit, the 100th anniversary of the community police officer position, and the 100th anniversary of police sports.

Official Statements and Guarding Public Security

In a letter to officers and civilian staff, Minister of Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński thanked personnel for their daily readiness, courage, and efforts to protect citizens. He emphasized the fundamental role of the police in ensuring internal state security, maintaining public order, and implementing modern solutions for 21st-century challenges.

During the main ceremony at Józef Piłsudski Square, Gen. Insp. Marek Boroń stressed that the police guarantee citizen safety during peacetime. Addressing public debates, he noted that the force serves everyone regardless of views or citizenship, operating strictly under current regulations.

Challenges and Personnel Updates

Boroń highlighted that ongoing conflicts near Poland’s eastern border, hybrid threats, migration pressure, cyberattacks, disinformation, and complex organized crime require the utmost professionalism, courage, and readiness from officers day and night.

Addressing staffing levels, Boroń noted that while personnel shortages were once a major challenge, the situation is systematically improving. Since last November, force numbers have remained above 100,000, standing at nearly 104,000 officers today. He also emphasized that maintaining a strong and respected force requires continuous investment in modern equipment and preparedness.

Police Salaries in 2026

A police officer’s earnings primarily consist of a base salary determined by their position’s rank group and length of service, along with various allowances. As of January 1, 2026, the base amount for professional soldiers and uniformed services stands at 2,259.01 PLN gross, representing a 3 percent increase from the previous year.

Officers receive seniority salary increases starting at 2 percent after two years of service, increasing by 1 percent for each subsequent year up to a maximum of 20 percent after 20 years. According to the National Police Headquarters, net base salaries range from 5,463.82 PLN for a trainee without the capital city allowance after turning 26, to 6,791.07 PLN for an officer with the capital city allowance in riot units after turning 26.
