New Privileges for Honorary Blood Donors: Who Qualifies and What Changes

Regular blood donors in Poland receive not only chocolate and thanks, but also financial perks, tax deductions, and additional time off, with new municipal parking exemptions ahead.

Blood Donation Privileges and Summer Shortages

Honorary blood donors can count on chocolate on the day of donation as well as specific privileges, including paid time off from work. Starting October 1, some donors will gain additional rights, while blood donation centers face challenging summer periods with fluctuating reserves that can be checked on regional RCKiK and WCKiK websites.

Because blood cannot be manufactured, every donation is invaluable, prompting lawmakers to introduce special bonuses for regular contributors who help maintain vital hospital reserves.

Requirements for the Honorary Blood Donor Title

Men must donate at least 6 liters of blood, plasma, or other components to earn the “Meritorious Blood Donor” title, while women must donate 5 liters due to medical limits allowing women to donate up to 4 times a year compared to 6 times for men.

Obtaining the 1st Degree Meritorious Honor Blood Donor card requires even higher volumes: at least 15 liters for women and 18 liters for men, respecting mandatory recovery intervals between donations.

Donation Frequency and General Requirements

Plasma can be donated every two weeks and platelets at intervals of at least 4 weeks, subject to annual limits. Donations take place at regional branches, field units, and mobile bloodmobiles.

Only healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 65 who weigh at least 50 kg are eligible to become blood donors.

Medical Disqualifications and Restrictions

Permanent contraindications for blood donation include infectious diseases like hepatitis and HIV, low hemoglobin levels, blood clotting disorders, cardiovascular diseases, neurological conditions, autoimmune diseases, cancer, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and drug or alcohol addiction.

Temporary exclusions apply following skin-piercing procedures, endoscopies, blood treatments within the past 6 months, recent breastfeeding, healed infections, menstruation, or vaccinations.

Time Off, Meals, and Tax Deductions

Donors receive a restorative meal, reimbursement for travel costs, a blood group identification card, and lab results. Employed donors receive paid leave on the day of donation and the following day—amounting to 12 days for men and 8 days for women—provided the employer receives a certificate from the blood center.

Donors can also utilize a tax deduction for donations amounting to 130 PLN per liter of blood or components, up to a maximum of 6 percent of the taxpayer’s income. Meritorious donors also gain priority access to healthcare services and pharmacies.

New Parking Privileges for Donors

The Lodz local government is introducing additional conveniences starting October 1, 2026, allowing certain blood, bone marrow, and organ donors to park for free within the Paid Parking Zone.

The Ministry of Infrastructure clarified in a parliamentary interpellation response that municipal councils regulate parking fees and local exemptions, and the ministry has no plans to alter national legislation regarding this matter.
