Polish Investigation Into Berlin Terror Attack
Polish prosecutors have opened an investigation into a terrorist attack that took place on Saturday, July 25, near the Pride Parade in Berlin. The attack resulted in the death of a 65-year-old Polish citizen from Warsaw, who was visiting the German capital with her daughter.
The National Prosecutor’s Office initiated its own proceedings under Article 118a of the Penal Code, handled by a prosecutor from the Mazovian Regional Division of the Department for Organized Crime and Corruption. The crime carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
Details of the Berlin Assault Near Tiergarten
The attack occurred at around 10:00 PM in the Tiergarten park area, near the Potsdam Square and the Brandenburg Gate. The driver of a white van plowed into a group of people and subsequently attacked random individuals with a bladed weapon before the vehicle crashed into a tree.
The 65-year-old Warsaw resident died at the scene from her injuries, while her daughter survived with wounds. A total of 29 people were injured, some critically, though later updates confirmed none of the hospitalized victims remained in immediate danger.
Suspect Identification and Police Operation
The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Abdul B., a German citizen born and raised in Berlin who had a prior record and suspected ties to Islamist circles. Following a manhunt lasting several hours, he was located in allotment gardens in the Spandau district.
During the police intervention, the suspect attempted to attack officers with a sharp tool and was subsequently shot dead. German authorities officially classified the incident as an Islamist terrorist attack, prompting the early conclusion of the Pride Parade and a prolonged security lockdown.
Diplomatic Support and Official Condolences
The Polish consul in Berlin remains in contact with German authorities and the victim’s family to provide necessary consular assistance. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner extended his condolences to the family of the slain woman and to the Polish authorities.
