NATO Member Closes Airspace Near Border Amid Rising Drone Fears

Finland temporarily closed its airspace near the port cities of Kotka and Hamina due to the risk of stray drones from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Finland Closes Airspace Over Drone Risks

Such a step is related to the risk of intrusion by drones used during the Russian-Ukrainian war, the public broadcaster YLE reported. Finland closed its airspace out of fear of drones.

The closure of the airspace came into effect just after 8:00 AM local time, and the adjacent waters shortly afterward. The restrictions apply to a small fragment of territory around the port cities of Kotka and Hamina, in the southeastern part of the country. The airspace was reopened after 11:00 AM local time.

Military Preparations and Previous Restrictions

The press service of the General Staff informed YLE that closing the sea areas and airspace is necessary so that, if needed, drones that might veer off course toward Finland can be safely repelled.

Similar restrictions have been introduced previously—most recently on July 10 in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland. These were related to drone attacks carried out by Ukraine against Russia.

British Intelligence Warnings on Potential Russian Provocations

Earlier, reports appeared in the media concerning the risk of Russia carrying out provocations or a form of direct confrontation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

British intelligence sources cited by Mail on Sunday report that Vladimir Putin is preparing a direct test of strength with NATO, utilizing the change in the Prime Minister position on Downing Street and Donald Trump’s engagement in the conflict with Iran. The new Prime Minister Andy Burnham is reportedly to be “tested” by the Kremlin, and Moscow is already changing the routes of its “shadow fleet” and conducting demonstration maneuvers off the coast of Great Britain.

Drone Incidents in Romania

On Sunday, July 26, a Romanian F-16 pilot shot down a drone that violated Romanian airspace. The event took place in the Sulina-Chilia area over the Black Sea. This was another such incident in the country. On Saturday, July 25, the Romanian military shot down a drone that illegally violated airspace about 9.6 km west of the city of Sfantu Gheorghe in central Romania.

As previously reported, a drone violated Romanian airspace for the first time on Friday, July 24, which NATO confirmed. The Alliance stated that it is investigating the matter, and Bucharest along with other countries is in the process of purchasing ground-based interceptor systems.

“It is unacceptable for the Russian Federation to continue violating the airspace of Romania, which is also the airspace of the NATO and the European Union,” stated the country’s president, Nicusor Dan.
