Suspect Identified in 1994 Forest Murder Cold Case After 30 Years

Following a cold case review 30 years after an unidentified man’s body was found in a Sieradz county forest, Polish police have arrested a 50-year-old suspect.

Discovery of the Body

The history of this case dates back to January 14, 1994, when the body of an unknown man was found in a forest in Sieradz county. The body was partially hidden underground and under forest litter, and numerous forensic traces and the victim’s clothing were secured at the scene.

According to investigators, from the moment the body was discovered, there was no doubt that the man had been murdered and his body concealed. The proceedings conducted by the Sieradz prosecutor’s office and the police command at the time failed to identify the victim and the perpetrator of the crime.

Breakthrough in the Investigation

In December 2023, the prosecutor re-examined the files, including gathered physical evidence and secured traces. He also ordered the determination of the DNA profile of the killed man and the inspection of his clothing stored in the evidence warehouse, where biological material was collected for genetic testing, resulting in a 50-year-old’s DNA profile.

The suspect is a resident of Brodnica county who was 17 years old at the time of the alleged murder. He has a history of multiple convictions for brutal crimes against life, health, and property, serving multi-year prison sentences, and due to his young age at the time, faces 8 to 15 years in prison or 25 years.

Suspect Hiding in the Forest

The arrest was made on July 23 by officers from the Łódź Cold Case Unit (Archiwum X) acting on the orders of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Sieradz. The 50-year-old is suspected of murder and a bold burglary at a Brodnica establishment resulting in nearly 150,000 in damages in early July.

Before the arrest, the 50-year-old hid in a forest out of fear of accountability for the burglary, while Łódź police pinpointed his location in cooperation with the Brodnica County Police Headquarters.

Police Appeal for Help

Authorities still do not know the identity of the murdered person, whose facial appearance was reconstructed by experts at the Institute of Forensic Research in Kraków using the skull and DNA phenotypic traits.
