Poland issues heatwave warnings across three tiers as temperatures soar

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued first-, second-, and third-degree heatwave warnings covering the entirety of Poland, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees Celsius.

First-Degree Heatwave Warnings

First-degree warnings are in effect in northwestern and northeastern Poland, specifically in the West Pomeranian, Pomeranian, Warmian-Masurian, and Podlaskie voivodeships. Maximum temperatures there will range from 29 to 34 degrees Celsius, with alerts active until 20:00 on Thursday.

Second-Degree Warnings Across Multiple Regions

Synopthicians issued second-degree warnings for the Lublin, Podkarpackie, Lesser Poland, Silesian, Opole, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Greater Poland, Łódź, Masovian, and Lubuskie voivodeships, as well as parts of the Lower Silesian, Świętokrzyskie, Podlaskie, West Pomeranian, Pomeranian, and Warmian-Masurian voivodeships. Maximum temperatures in these areas will reach 31 to 34 degrees Celsius on Thursday and 33 to 36 degrees Celsius on Friday, with nighttime temperatures between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius until Friday at 20:00.

Third-Degree Alerts and Risk Severity

Third-degree warnings are in effect for a significant part of the Lower Silesian and Lubuskie voivodeships and the western edge of the Greater Poland voivodeship until Friday at 20:00. Maximum temperatures will range from 33 to 36 degrees Celsius on Thursday and 31 to 34 degrees Celsius on Friday, with nighttime lows of 19 to 22 degrees Celsius. First- and second-degree warnings anticipate hazardous meteorological phenomena that may cause major material damage and health threats, while third-degree warnings warn of dangerous phenomena causing very severe or catastrophic damage and life-threatening risks.

Forecast for Saturday Storms

IMGW forecasts that rainfall and locally violent storms with wind gusts up to 80-90 km/h will occur in most of northern, western, and central Poland on Saturday. Temperatures on the coast will reach about 22-23 degrees Celsius, 27 degrees Celsius in the west, and up to 35 degrees Celsius in the southeast.
