Polish Police Arrest Man Who Urged Authorities to Assassinate Zelensky

Following an online post on Wednesday calling for the assassination of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a 40-year-old man was arrested by Polish police in Lesser Poland on Thursday.

Online Call for Assassination

A man published a post inciting a crime on a nationalist-ethnic platform on Wednesday, July 29. According to Junior Aspirant Mateusz Lenartowicz of the Lesser Poland Police speaking on Radio Szczecin, the comment encouraged Polish authorities to kill Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Cybercrime Bureau Detection

One day later, on Thursday, July 30, the Voivodeship Police Headquarters in Kraków announced his arrest. Lesser Poland officers stated in a communique that the content published by the man was uncovered by officers from the Central Cybercrime Bureau while monitoring the network.

Detention and Investigation

Superintendent Katarzyna Cisło, spokesperson for the Lesser Poland police, informed the Polish Press Agency that the basis for the detention was gathered evidence concerning the 40-year-old’s social media posts. Superintendent Cisło stated that the man explained to police officers that he acted under the influence of emotions and regrets his actions.

Charges and Potential Sentence

Proceedings in the case are being conducted under the supervision of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Muszyna. Investigators accuse the man of publicly inciting the crime of murder and insulting the president of Ukraine. He faces up to three years of imprisonment for the committed acts.
