Trump Backpedals on Patriot Production for Ukraine as Envoys Prepare for Kyiv

Following previous announcements, US President Donald Trump stated he is unsure about granting Ukraine a license to produce Patriot missiles, while his envoys prepare to visit Kyiv.

Trump Expresses Caution Over Patriot Missile License for Ukraine

On July 8 during the NATO summit in Ankara, the US President announced in a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Kyiv would receive a license to produce missiles for Patriot systems in Ukraine. Zelensky told Axios that during Tuesday’s meeting, Trump had also agreed to issue the Patriot missile production license.

Donald Trump addressed the licensing issue in an interview with the British daily “Financial Times”. – This is a very special weapon and we have to be a little careful about who we give a license to – he said. He stated that he is “not sure” if he will allow Ukraine to produce these missiles. – We are analyzing it – he added.

– Put very simply, we want an end to the war in Ukraine with Russia – Trump stated. – I am not pushing for missiles. We are pushing for peace – he added.

Trump’s Envoys to Visit Kyiv Amid Diplomatic Push

The president also announced in Thursday’s interview with the British daily that in the coming days, his envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will visit Ukraine for the first time. The “FT” previously wrote that the visit is intended to revitalize diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Earlier on Thursday, Radio Free Europe reported that the visit to Kyiv by the president’s envoys is scheduled to take place in the second half of August. According to these reports, Witkoff and Kushner would participate in events marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, which falls on August 24.

US Ambassador to NATO Discusses Military Support and Technology

– First of all, the Ukrainians urgently need available air defense systems and missiles for those systems. Some of our allies have certain stockpiles in this regard, so we are trying to help broker such agreements – US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated on Fox News. He did not disclose further details regarding these agreements.

The diplomat, who visited Ukraine last week, also assessed that “in many areas – whether it is deep strikes using their missiles, drone technologies, or counter-drone technologies – Ukraine is a testing ground for the future of war”.

– Innovation is happening very quickly there – Whitaker emphasized, adding that he is striving to ensure the United States is able “not only to cooperate and acquire these technologies”, but also to look for ways to build some of these systems and develop those technologies to support the US military. He noted that he has the counter-drone issue particularly in mind.

I think we have great domestic technologies, but as the fight continues and technological development progresses very quickly, Ukraine can really help us in a few key areas that are crucial for protecting our soldiers and the best armed forces in the world – the US military – he declared.
