61-Year-Old Woman Confesses to 22-Year-Old Murder in Olsztyn

A 61-year-old resident of Olsztyn has confessed to killing a man 22 years ago, whose skeletal remains were accidentally discovered by two teenagers in a local forest in September 2025.

Background of the Victim

The case concerns a man born in 1958 who was wanted by the District Court in Olsztyn to serve a prison sentence for offenses including attempted fraud and using forged documents stolen earlier, as reported by PAP. Finding him was difficult because he had no permanent residence since divorcing his wife in 1998, and police established he was last seen in early 2004.

Accidental Discovery of Skeletal Remains

According to police, his skeleton was accidentally found by two young people playing and digging in the ground in a forest near the Łyna river on 15 Dywizji Street in Olsztyn in September 2025, prompting them to notify the authorities. Warmia-Mazury police reported that initial inspections of the site and the body indicated the death was unnatural and the burial site was meant to remain undiscovered.

Identification via DNA Analysis

Officers found no documents near the remains to help determine the victim’s identity, which was achieved through biological testing and DNA analysis. In early July, police appealed for anyone with information that could help solve the death of Mr. Stanisław to come forward.

Arrest and Confession of the Suspect

Police stated that interviews with targeted witnesses and operational work led to the detention of the suspect, a 61-year-old Olsztyn resident who had a personal relationship with the victim 22 years ago, and she confessed during procedural steps and interrogations to causing the man’s death.

Transporting and Hiding the Body

The murder reportedly occurred while the woman and man were near his place of residence, after which the suspect hid Mr. Stanisław’s body in a baby stroller, transported it to the discovery site, and placed it in a makeshift hole covered with dirt and leaves. When the case came to light, she provided a detailed account during a local reconstruction with the prosecutor and police officers.

Charges and Pre-Trial Detention

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Olsztyn charged the woman with murder, and at the prosecutor’s request, the Olsztyn court temporarily arrested her for three months, facing a prison sentence ranging from eight years to life.
