Black Saturday in the Tatras: TOPR Rescuers Transport Two Bodies to Zakopane

Amid heavy tourist traffic, two fatal accidents occurred in the Tatra Mountains on Saturday, prompting urgent safety warnings from TOPR rescue teams.

Fatal Accidents on the Trails

Despite beautiful and sunny weather bringing crowds of tourists to mountain trails, Saturday marked a dark day in the Tatras with two fatal accidents. A duty rescuer for TOPR reported that there was no chance of saving a tourist who fell from Giewont, while a climber died while scaling the wall of Mięguszowiecki Szczyt.

The first incident occurred in the area of Skrajna Sieczkowa Przełęcz, where a tourist fell off the trail toward Dolina Buczynowa. A TOPR duty rescuer stated that the victim most likely tripped, slipped, lost balance, and fell from a great height.

Random witnesses notified the TOPR headquarters about the incident. Although rescuers reached the location, the tourist’s life could not be saved, and his body was transported to Zakopane aboard a TOPR helicopter.

Climber Fatality Near Morskie Oko

The second accident took place during a climb on the wall of Mięguszowiecki Szczyt in the Morskie Oko region. The victim’s climbing partner alerted rescuers to the emergency.

A TOPR duty rescuer reported that a tragic accident occurred during the climb, though details of the event are not yet available. The man’s body was transported by helicopter to Zakopane.

Crowds and Warnings from Rescuers

Saturday marked another day with very heavy tourist traffic in the Tatras, with hot weather increasing the risk of dehydration and rapid physical exhaustion.

Rescuers urge visitors to check the weather forecast, properly plan their routes, and carry an adequate supply of water before heading into the mountains. Conditions in the higher parts of the Tatras can change very quickly, and thunderstorms are forecasted for Sunday afternoon.
