Human Hand Discovered in Ciechanów; Two Items Found Near Remains May Hold Answers

On Saturday evening, dog walkers on Płocka Street in Ciechanów found a human hand fragment near a property fence, leading police to discover more remains nearby the following day.

Discovery of the Hand

On Saturday evening, people walking a dog on Płocka Street in Ciechanów found a fragment of a hand. The discovery was made near the fence of one of the properties there. Following the report, police officers who arrived at the scene used service dogs, including those trained to find corpses, to search the area.

A day later, officers came across human remains in the thickets. The body was located a few hundred meters from the place where the hand was found. Detailed inspections were carried out at the site, and the police initiated proceedings under the supervision of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Ciechanów.

This is a hard-to-reach area, wasteland, heavily overgrown with bushes and trees. Nobody usually walks through there. Witnesses happened to stumble upon the hand because it was located near the path, Bartosz Maliszewski, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Płock, told Gazeta.pl on Monday.

The man’s remains were not so much in a state of decomposition as partially skeletonized. Death most likely occurred in the last autumn-winter period, because the body was dressed in precisely such clothing, we hear.

Phone and Notebook Found Near the Deceased

There were no identity documents with the body, but a phone and a notebook with addresses and phone numbers were found. This is some starting point, the prosecutor tells us. The police will deal with establishing the man’s identity, which will include analyzing the register of missing persons.

Inspections carried out at the scene showed no traces of mechanical injuries, such as cutting or dismemberment. An autopsy is planned. Perhaps it will bring some closer answer about the circumstances of death, the spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Płock told the Gazeta.pl portal.

Preliminary findings also did not confirm that the hand was cut off by anyone intentionally. Most likely we have here the effect of animals. Unfortunately, this is what happens in the case of corpses that remain in the open for a long time, explained Prosecutor Bartosz Maliszewski.
