Discovery and Initial Rescue
Three approximately two-month-old puppies were found on August 3 in the Ciechan贸w area. An unknown perpetrator mutilated the animals by attempting to cut off their ears before abandoning them.
An accidental woman discovered the mutilated dogs and initially tried to interest various institutions in their fate. The puppies were subsequently taken to a veterinary clinic in Ciechan贸w and later to the Animal Shelter in Paw艂owo.
Emergency Medical Treatment
The condition of the animals required urgent, specialized help. On August 3, they were transported to the Centaur Veterinary Center in M艂awa.
Doctors determined that one puppy had its ears completely cut off, while the other two had ear flaps hanging only by fragments of skin. According to veterinarians, the nature of the injuries indicates that the perpetrator likely used a sharp tool and did not use anesthetics.
Surgeries and Current Recovery
As the Paw艂owo shelter reported, the wounds were already infected upon the puppies’ arrival, leaving no time to delay treatment. The dogs underwent ear flap reconstruction surgery.
The operations were intended not only to limit the effects of the mutilation but also to enable the preserved parts of the ears to function properly. Following the procedures, the puppies returned to the shelter.
The animals are currently staying in the quarantine hospital under constant observation, receiving necessary medication, and recovering from surgery in good condition. Once treatment concludes, the shelter plans to search for responsible guardians to provide new homes.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Initially, the Ciechan贸w County Police Headquarters had not received an official notification regarding the animal mutilation. However, officers initiated proceedings ex officio after reviewing media publications.
Police have reached out to the woman who found the abandoned dogs to establish the exact timeline of events and identify both the owner and the perpetrator. The search is complicated by the lack of electronic identification tags to trace the puppies’ origin.
Katarzyna 艢liwa-艁obacz, president of the Mondo Cane Animal Rights Protection Foundation, also announced that a formal notification has been filed with the prosecutor’s office.
Under the Animal Protection Act, intentional wounding or mutilation of an animal that is not a legal veterinary procedure is classified as animal abuse, alongside the abandonment of a dog or cat by its owner or caregiver.
Animal abuse carries a penalty of up to three years of imprisonment. If the perpetrator acts with particular cruelty, the sentence can extend up to five years in prison.
