Kaczyński Interrogation Leak Triggers Probe as Justice Minister Warns Ziobro Loyalists Remain in Prosecution Office

Following the leaked interrogation of PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński, Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek and Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that no one is above the law, while pointing to remaining loyalists of former minister Ziobro within the prosecution.

Leak of Kaczyński Interrogation

A few days ago, the goniec.pl portal published online recordings featuring fragments of the interrogation of PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński at the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office. The politician testified in June as a witness in the case of the so-called two towers.

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw announced that it is conducting activities related to the recording leak. The prosecutor’s office noted that the only person who applied for access to the entire case file was one of the victim’s attorneys, MP Roman Giertych of the Civic Coalition. However, the politician ensures that he was not behind the disclosure of these materials, stating in an interview with Fakt that the leak originated from the prosecutor’s office.

Waldemar Żurek on Prosecution Staff

Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek avoided assessing on Wednesday whether Civic Coalition MP Roman Giertych is behind the transfer of the recording to the media. He stated that as Prosecutor General he never suggests someone committed a crime until they are called, questioned, and charged, while confirming Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s stance that there are no sacred cows.

The minister simultaneously admitted that there are still very many people of former minister Ziobro in the prosecution office. He observed very bad leaks that can sometimes pose a threat to the life or health of various individuals, describing them as deliberate leaks aimed at weakening prosecutors or destroying nascent and developmental investigations.

Donald Tusk on Roman Giertych

During a Wednesday press conference, Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that if it turned out MP Giertych did anything illegal, such as taking out these materials, he would naturally bear the consequences.

According to the prime minister, Roman Giertych is a person who is meritorious in some matters and controversial in others. He added that Giertych is not a sacred cow and if he broke the law, he is out.

Dismissal of the Two Towers Case

On June 25, two weeks after Kaczyński’s interrogation, the prosecutor’s office discontinued the two-tower case. It concerned failed plans to build two skyscrapers on a plot in Warsaw belonging to Srebrna, a company associated with PiS politicians.

The investigation concerned the fraud of Austrian businessman Gerald Birgfellner for at least 1.3 million euros by individuals acting on behalf of Srebrna. The businessman’s attorneys filed an appeal against the decision to discontinue the investigation.
