Poland to Join German Ministerial Talks on Critical Infrastructure and Drone Threats

Poland will participate in an August 28 meeting in Germany where interior ministers from Central, Eastern, and Northern Europe will discuss drone defense strategies and critical infrastructure protection following a security incident in Leipzig.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on August 28. Gałecka told PAP that decisions regarding which minister will travel to Germany will be made closer to the date, but it will most likely be either Marcin Kierwiński or Maciej Duszczyk.

German Interior Ministry Organizes Flensburg Talks

The German DPA agency reported on Thursday that Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt invited interior ministers from Central, Eastern, and Northern Europe to Flensburg. The discussions are set to focus on defense against unmanned aerial systems and the protection of critical infrastructure.

The information, initially reported by the Bild daily, was confirmed by the German Ministry of the Interior. The meeting will take place at the Muerwik Naval School in Flensburg, in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. According to DPA, representatives from Poland, the Baltic states, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark are scheduled to take part, aiming to develop a joint drone defense strategy and strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure vulnerable to airborne attacks.

Leipzig Airport Incident Prompts New Security Warnings

The announcement of the meeting follows an incident from the night between Tuesday and Wednesday at the Leipzig airport, where air traffic was temporarily suspended after a drone equipped with a detonator and explosives was found on the tarmac in the immediate vicinity of a Ukrainian An-124 “Ruslan” transport aircraft. The Leipzig airport is utilized as a transit point for weapons and military equipment shipments destined for Ukraine.

Alexander Dobrindt stated on Wednesday that the incident represents a “new quality of threat” in hybrid warfare. Due to the professional construction of the drone, he did not rule out the involvement of “foreign powers.” In an interview with German public television ARD, he noted that this is a hybrid assassination scenario involving a drone with explosives on an airport grounds for the first time, emphasizing that politicians must respond to this threat.

According to the German minister’s statements, the unmanned vehicle was armed with military explosives and constructed in a way that enabled it to bypass airport security systems. On the same night near the Leipzig airport, a transport aircraft collided with an unidentified object, subsequently landing in Hanover with minor damage reported approximately 6 kilometers from the airport at an altitude of about 400 meters.
