Pensions and Benefit Limits Set to Rise in March 2027
Not only pensions will increase from March 2027. Along with the indexation, ZUS will also raise the income limit entitling individuals to the 500 plus benefit for persons unable to live independently. Our calculations indicate that some seniors may recover the full 500 PLN per month. We checked who will benefit the most from the changes.
If current indexation forecasts are confirmed, the threshold entitling recipients to the full benefit will increase by almost 94 PLN. For many retirees, this could mean an additional several hundred zlotys per month, even though the amount of the benefit itself will remain unchanged.
Current Rules and Projected Thresholds After Indexation
Every year on March 1, pensions and annuities paid by ZUS change. However, far fewer people realize that indexation also affects the rules for granting the supplementary benefit for persons unable to live independently, commonly referred to as the 500 plus for seniors. The mechanism is written into the law. The amount of the allowance itself does not change, remaining at a maximum of 500 PLN per month, but every year the income limit increases, above which ZUS begins to reduce the paid amount.
Currently, the full benefit is granted to people whose sum of included benefits financed from public funds does not exceed 2,187.67 PLN gross. The upper limit is 2,687.67 PLN gross. After exceeding it, the right to the allowance expires. The government has already adopted a proposal according to which the indexation of pensions and annuities in 2027 is to be at least 3.48 percent. The final rate will only be known after the end of 2026, but today it is already possible to estimate how the limits will change if current forecasts are maintained.
Calculations Based on the Government Forecast
Based on the current government indexation forecast, we prepared our own calculations. They assume an increase in all limits by 3.48 percent. This means that the second of these values may prove to be the most important for many seniors.
Today, a person receiving a pension of approximately 2,200 PLN gross exceeds the threshold entitling them to the full benefit. However, after next year’s indexation, not only the amount of the pension will change, but also the limit itself. Our calculations show that such a person will once again fit within the limit allowing them to receive the full 500 PLN per month. This is the effect of the annual indexation of limits prescribed by law. In practice, some seniors will gain twice — their pension will increase, and at the same time they will regain the full amount of the allowance.
It must be remembered, however, that the presented values are editorial calculations based on the current indexation forecast of 3.48 percent. The final amounts will be announced by ZUS before the March 2027 indexation, once the final indexation rate is known.
Examples of Benefit Adjustments for Specific Pension Amounts
The greatest interest currently surrounds people receiving benefits near the current limit. They are the ones who will feel the change in regulations effective from March 2027 the most. Our calculations show that the situation may look as follows.
A senior currently receiving 2,200 PLN gross is not entitled to the full 500 PLN. Following indexation by the forecasted 3.48 percent, their pension would rise to about 2,276.56 PLN gross. At the same time, the full benefit boundary would increase to about 2,281.20 PLN. This means the senior would once again fall below the limit and could receive the full 500 PLN per month.
The situation is different for a person currently receiving 2,500 PLN gross. After indexation, the benefit would rise to about 2,587 PLN gross, so it would still exceed the full benefit threshold. The allowance would therefore be correspondingly reduced in accordance with the applicable “zloty for zloty” rule. In our calculation, it would amount to about 194.20 PLN per month.
Who Will Not Receive the Full Benefit After the 2027 Changes?
Raising the limit from March 2027 will be good news for some seniors, but it does not automatically mean that everyone will receive the full supplementary benefit. The rule stating that the amount of the allowance depends on the sum of benefits considered by ZUS will still apply. The biggest change will be felt by people whose pension or annuity is currently near the current threshold. In their case, even a slight increase in the limit may decide about regaining the full 500 PLN per month.
The situation is different for seniors receiving higher benefits. If, after indexation, the sum of included benefits still exceeds the new limit, ZUS will reduce the allowance accordingly or not grant it at all. The benefit still cannot be applied for by people who do not meet the primary criterion.
It is worth remembering that the supplementary benefit is not an allowance granted solely due to reaching retirement age. The decisive factor is primarily the established inability to live independently.
How the “Zloty for Zloty” Rule Works
The supplementary benefit operates on a simple mechanism. If the sum of benefits exceeds the threshold entitling to the full 500 PLN, ZUS reduces the allowance by exactly the amount of the excess. Suppose that after the March indexation, the full benefit limit will be — according to our calculations — 2,281.20 PLN gross. A senior receives a pension of 2,380.04 PLN gross. This means exceeding the threshold by 98.84 PLN. As a result, the supplementary benefit will be reduced by precisely this amount.
The same mechanism applies until the upper limit is reached. When the sum of benefits equals the maximum threshold, the right to the allowance expires. Thanks to this solution, people exceeding the limit by a few or several dozen zlotys do not lose the entire benefit, but only a part of it.
This question arises with almost every pension indexation. The law provides for annual indexation of the limit entitling to the benefit because it is linked to the indexation of pensions and annuities. As a result, people receiving higher benefits do not automatically lose the right to the allowance just because their pension was increased by ZUS. The situation of the supplementary benefit itself is different. The maximum amount remains 500 PLN per month, and current regulations do not provide for its automatic indexation. This means that since 2019, only the threshold entitling to receive the allowance has increased, while its maximum amount remains unchanged. In practice, some seniors retain the right to the benefit despite an increase in their pension, but the amount of the allowance still does not exceed 500 PLN per month.
When Will ZUS Announce the New Limits?
Although the government has already presented a proposal for an indexation rate of at least 3.48 percent, this does not mean that exactly this increase will apply from March of next year. The final rate will be calculated based on data on inflation and average wage growth for the entire year 2026. Only then will the President of ZUS announce the new limits applicable to the supplementary benefit.
For people receiving pensions in the range of 2,200–2,400 PLN gross, this will be a particularly important moment. Even a minor change in the indexation rate may determine whether the benefit is paid in full or continues to be reduced. It is therefore worth following ZUS announcements published at the beginning of 2027. That is when we will learn the final amounts applicable from March 1.
