Imprisoned Ex-US Soldier in Russia Faces Critical Condition Amid Political Detention Claims

Former US Marine Robert Gilman, imprisoned in Russia since 2022 and facing a 10-year sentence, is in critical condition, according to his family and advocates.

Former US Marine Corps soldier, 32-year-old Robert Gilman, has been in a Russian correctional facility since 2022. Initially, a court in Voronezh sentenced him to 4.5 years in a penal colony for assaulting a police officer. Subsequently, this sentence was extended to 10 years in connection with Russian authorities accusing the American of attacking a prison worker and an investigator.

Unresponsive to External Stimuli

As reported by the “New York Times”, citing Gilman’s family and the Global Reach organization, the man has been in a state of dissociative stupor since June of this year, meaning his movements are drastically restricted and he does not respond to external stimuli while maintaining consciousness.

Hospitalization and Denied Visitation

Gilman is currently in a civilian hospital where he is fed orally through a tube with only liquid food. As the NYT specifies, he is struggling with high fever and hypertension. Representatives of the organization describe his condition as critical and life-threatening. The prisoner’s mother came to Russia, but the medical facility staff refused to let her see her son.

Washington Views Gilman as a Bargaining Chip

Gilman’s family and representatives of Global Reach maintain that the man’s imprisonment is political in nature and stems directly from his American citizenship. The US Department of State issued a statement expressing deep concern over the deteriorating health and continued detention of the prisoner. Washington authorities noted that they have repeatedly intervened in this matter with the Russian government, demanding the release of the US citizen for humanitarian reasons. The United States accuses Moscow of deliberately detaining Americans to use them as a tool for leverage during prisoner exchange negotiations.
