1 Billion PLN for Mass Meter Installation
A staggering one billion zlotys will go toward the mass purchase and installation of modern remote-reading energy meters in Polish homes and businesses. The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOÅšiGW) announced that it will finance the installation of nearly 5 million such devices as part of a nationwide revolution.
Under current regulations, every electricity consumer in Poland must have a device connected to the central system by July 2031.
Funding and Implementation Timeline
The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management has signed agreements worth 1 billion PLN for the purchase and installation of remote-reading energy meters in households and businesses across Poland, the Fund announced on Monday, adding that it will finance the installation of nearly 5 million such meters.
Under the Electrical Power Engineering – Intelligent Energy Infrastructure program, NFOŚiGW is funding the purchase and installation of nearly 5 million meters for households and companies. The funding covers the purchase of remote-reading meters (AMI), their installation, modernization, and the adaptation of infrastructure to support the new system. To date, NFOŚiGW has signed grant agreements totaling 1 billion PLN, with investment implementation planned until 2030, and further agreements are planned.
The Fund added that these investments are financed from Modernisation Fund resources.
End of Bill Estimates and Real-Time Energy Control
The Fund explained that remote-reading meters continuously record electricity consumption and automatically transmit data to the operator. This ensures that residents and entrepreneurs are billed for actual energy consumption without the need to base bills on estimates.
Furthermore, users can easily check how much energy they are consuming at any given time, making it easier to control expenses, use time-of-day tariffs, and choose the most cost-effective solutions. Such meters also help owners of installations such as photovoltaics to monitor the amount of energy fed back into the grid.
Faster Service and More Efficient Outage Management
These meters also allow power grid operators to detect failures faster, locate them more accurately, and restore power supplies more efficiently. The devices also streamline customer service, including tariff changes and energy supplier switches.
Real-time access to such data also enables operators to manage the grid more effectively, monitor the quality of supplied energy, and better plan infrastructure development.
Modern and Secure Energy System
NFOÅšiGW also noted that the development of renewable energy sources, the modernization of the electrical grid, and the construction of energy storage facilities make it possible to create a secure, modern, and more resilient energy system.
New Obligation for Every Household by 2031
The Fund added that data from smart meters will be sent to the Central Energy Market Information System (CSIRE), which will improve information exchange among market participants and the management of the national power system.
The announcement also recalled that, according to the law, all final electricity consumers in Poland are to be equipped with remote-reading meters connected to CSIRE by July 2031.
