NATO Condemnation and Defense Posture
Following a meeting, a spokesperson stated in a Wednesday, August 12 post on the X platform that allies condemned Russia for its reckless actions, expressed solidarity with affected allies, and confirmed unwavering support for Ukraine. Hart declared that NATO continues to increase its capability to deter and defend against any aggression.
Ch-101 Missile Falls in Lublin Voivodeship
Polish airspace was violated during the night from July 29 to 30 when a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile fell near the town of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin Voivodeship. The incident occurred during a massive Russian attack on western Ukraine, after an unidentified object was detected in Polish airspace at 3:40 AM and tracked by the military. The District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin determined that the missile contained a significant amount of explosive material.
Interception and Investigation Measures
Polish F-16 fighter jets, supported by Polish and allied reconnaissance aircraft as well as NATO air refuelers from a base in Germany, were dispatched to secure Polish airspace. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported on July 31 that the missile was built in the second quarter of this year at a factory near Moscow, confirming that Russia uses freshly produced missiles for shelling Ukraine while its wartime reserves are depleted.
Romania Shoots Down Shahed Drones
Between July 24 and 26, the Romanian air force shot down three military Shahed-type drones over its territory. All three combat missions were executed by F-16 fighter pilots supported by Italian Eurofighters under the NATO Air Policing mission, enabled by a 2025 Romanian parliamentary law allowing the destruction of airspace-violating objects in peacetime.
Previous Incidents and Black Sea Operations
This was not the first such incident in Romania, as a Russian drone struck a ten-story residential building in Galați on the night of May 28 to 29, injuring two people near the Ukrainian border. On Tuesday, August 11, the Ministry of Defense in Bucharest reported that Romanian military divers destroyed two Gerbera-type drones drifting in Romania’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep gas project, approximately 165 km from Constanța.
