Malbork MiG-29 Malfunction: Military Releases New Details

Following a training flight in Malbork on Wednesday evening, a Polish MiG-29 experienced locked brakes and damaged tires during landing, prompting official military clarifications.

MiG-29 Brake Malfunction During Landing

A Polish MiG-29 fighter jet encountered problems during landing at the military airport in Malbork. The machine’s brakes locked up, and two tires were damaged. The pilot completed the flight safely, and the military debunked earlier reports regarding a much more serious incident. The aircraft is now awaiting a technical inspection.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, August 12, 2026, following a training flight performed by a pair of Polish MiG-29 fighters. During landing at the military airport in Malbork, the brakes on one of the aircraft locked up, resulting in damage to two tires.

Despite the technical problems, the pilot safely landed the machine, and no one was injured. Information about the course of events was provided by TVN24, citing the Operational Command of the Armed Forces. The military emphasized that the incident did not end in a catastrophe, and the crew was not endangered in a way that would require an emergency ejection from the aircraft.

The damaged MiG-29 remained at the airport. The machine is scheduled to undergo a brake system inspection, and the destroyed tires will be replaced. Only after technical procedures are completed will a decision be made regarding the aircraft’s further operation.

Military Denies Rumors of Landing Without Gear

Shortly after the incident, unconfirmed reports began appearing on social media suggesting a much more serious malfunction. According to some posts, the MiG-29 was supposed to have landed without landing gear. These reports were denied by the military.

The confirmed course of events was different. The aircraft’s landing gear functioned properly, and the problem concerned the brakes and two tires. The machine also did not crash.

The discrepancy between the initial reports and the information provided later by the armed forces shows how crucial it is in military aviation incidents to rely on official communications. The military has not yet revealed the technical cause of the brake lockup.

Second MiG-29 Diverted to Alternate Airfield

The training flight was carried out by two aircraft. Following the incident, the second MiG-29 could not immediately complete its landing in Malbork. In accordance with procedures in such situations, the machine was diverted to an alternate airfield while the runway was secured and the consequences of the incident were cleared.

The military did not publicly disclose at which airfield the second fighter landed. Colonel Marek Pawlak, spokesperson for the General Commander of the Armed Forces, told Polish Radio that the aircraft subsequently began its return to the parent 22nd Tactical Air Base in Malbork.

Directing the machine to another airport did not signify another malfunction. It was part of the safety procedure associated with the temporary restriction of runway availability in Malbork.

Military Commission to Investigate the Incident

The circumstances of the incident are to be investigated by the State Aviation Accident Investigation Commission. Its task will be to determine the exact course of the incident and the causes of the brake system problems.

At this stage, there are no grounds to prejudge what led to the brake lockup. Explanations will require determining, among other things, whether the source of the problem was a defect in a specific component, the degree of part wear, or other technical factors related to the operation of the aircraft.

Investigating such incidents is a standard procedure in military aviation. Its primary purpose is to determine causes and limit the risk of similar problems occurring during subsequent flights.

Polish MiG-29s Approach the End of Service

The incident in Malbork occurred at a time when the Polish Air Force is gradually preparing to end the operation of MiG-29s. Aircraft of this type have served in Poland since 1989. For many years, they constituted one of the fundamental elements of fighter aviation and were used, among other things, for airspace protection, combat duty, and pilot training.

Currently, the significance of MiG-29s is systematically declining. Their tasks are being taken over by newer aircraft in the Polish inventory, primarily F-16s and FA-50s. Another significant element of the Air Force modernization is the entry into service of F-35 aircraft.

The Ministry of National Defense indicated earlier that the remaining MiG-29s will be gradually withdrawn as they reach their target operational lifespans. The lifespan defines the permissible time or scope of use for the structure and its most important subassemblies.

MiG-29s for Ukraine and Retirement Plans

The future of the MiG-29s remaining in Poland was also tied to discussions regarding the potential transfer of additional machines to Ukraine. Poland has previously transferred some of its aircraft of this type to the Ukrainian armed forces.

At the end of 2025, the Ministry of National Defense and the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces reported on further talks concerning the future of the remaining machines. In exchange, Poland considered the possibility of gaining access to selected Ukrainian military technologies, including solutions related to unmanned combat systems and missile technologies.

Ultimately, the aircraft remaining in the country continue to be used to perform training and operational tasks. Their further service is nevertheless limited by expiring lifespans and the ongoing modernization of Polish aviation.

22nd Tactical Air Base in Malbork After MiG-29 Retirement

The retirement of the MiG-29s does not mean the military airfield in Malbork will lose its significance. The 22nd Tactical Air Base remains an important element of the Polish Armed Forces’ infrastructure and the NATO airspace protection system.

Malbork is utilized not only by Polish aviation. Allied nations participating in the reinforcement of NATO’s eastern flank also periodically station aircraft at the base. At the end of 2025, the Ministry of National Defense reported, among other things, the deployment of German Eurofighters participating in airspace protection there.

Wednesday’s incident thus concerns a specific MiG-29, rather than the functioning of the entire base. The aircraft will remain grounded until the inspection and required repairs are completed.
