Over 22 Billion PLN Paid Out in Six Months
ZUS has summarized the massive expenditures on support for individuals who have lost their spouses, with data for the first half of 2026 showing the mechanism has become a financial lifeline for over 1.1 million widows and widowers in Poland.
The mechanism relies on a revolutionary combination of a senior’s own pension with a survivor’s pension from a deceased partner, whereas previously widows and widowers had to choose only one more profitable benefit.
The Limit Trap and How ZUS Cuts Payments
The introduced regulations feature a safeguard designed to protect the state budget from excessive payouts, setting the maximum sum a senior can receive from two combined benefits at three times the lowest pension—currently exactly 5,935.47 PLN gross.
The deduction mechanism operates ruthlessly against anyone approaching this statutory threshold.
Two Configurations and the Upcoming January 2027 Jump
Seniors have the full right to decide which financial configuration is more profitable for them, with two variants available to choose from.
Currently, the additional bonus stands at 15% and increases the monthly senior budget by an average of 379.10 PLN, but a key change will take effect on January 1, 2027, when this rate statutorily increases to 25%, raising the average bonus to over 630 PLN monthly while increasing the risk of cuts for those near the limit.
March 2027 Adjustments and the Dynamic Limit
For seniors threatened by exceeding the limit, the current rigid boundary of 5,935.47 PLN gross will not last forever because it is tied to triple the minimum pension and will automatically increase on March 1, 2027, alongside the annual benefit indexation.
If the minimum pension increases according to projected rates, the safeguard will shift upward, allowing many retirees to retain the full amount of their January increase without fear of immediate official deductions.
Four Conditions and the Remarriage Trap
ZUS meticulously verifies every applicant, and the money is granted exclusively to individuals who simultaneously meet four specific criteria.
Beneficiaries must note a critical trap: if you decide to remarry and enter into a new marital relationship, the right to collect combined benefits from ZUS expires immediately and irretrievably.
The Second Trap Involving KRUS and Uniformed Pensions
Fast payouts and automatic calculations primarily apply to individuals whose both benefits—own and spousal—are handled entirely by ZUS, whereas problems arise when different institutions are involved.
According to interventions by the Ombudsman, seniors whose cases require cooperation between entities like ZUS and KRUS face bureaucratic barriers where inter-system communication and verification of gross amounts can take from several to even 13 months, worst of all without interest for the waiting period.
How to Check Your Account Using PUE ZUS
To spare seniors visits to offices, ZUS has launched free tools on the Electronic Services Platform (PUE ZUS / eZUS).
Before logging in, users should prepare their latest pension indexation decisions and the survivor pension grant decision, entering gross amounts into the system fields so the calculator can factor in the current limit and indicate the more lucrative variant.
