The June Retirement Trap
Submitting a retirement application in June 2026 is a significant financial error for many. Although ZUS performed an annual indexation of accounts on June 1, haste can be costly. Experts and ZUS warn that delaying the application by just a few weeks to July results in a permanently higher monthly pension.
Spring and early summer are peak times for Poles reaching retirement age—60 for women and 65 for men—to plan their departure from the workforce. While the June 2026 annual indexation increased accumulated capital by nearly 10 percent, filing immediately is a costly mistake.
How the Quarterly Indexation Mechanism Works
The issue stems from a complex quarterly indexation mechanism in Polish insurance law. If you apply in June, your capital is subject only to the annual indexation; ZUS will not credit the quarterly indexation for the first quarter of the year. The law is structured so that this quarterly adjustment is simply not available in June.
The situation changes on July 1. Those who wait until the beginning of the following month benefit from both the annual indexation from June 1 and the favorable indexation for the first quarter of 2026, leading to a higher base for their future pension payments.
Calculating the Financial Loss
The differences in monthly payments are substantial. For someone with 300,000 PLN in capital, a June retirement yields roughly 1,200 PLN, while a July start increases this to 1,320 PLN—a loss of 120 PLN every month. For those with 500,000 PLN, the monthly loss is approximately 220 PLN.
High-earners with 800,000 PLN in accumulated capital face the steepest penalties, losing 380 PLN per month, which equates to 5,000 PLN annually. Because pension amounts are set once, ZUS will never compensate for this initial oversight.
Strategic Timing for Your Application
A common mistake is terminating an employment contract at the end of June and filing the application on the same day. ZUS considers the date the EMP form is received as the deciding factor. Even if a document arrives on June 30, the system calculates the pension under the unfavorable June rules.
You can safely terminate your employment in June, but ensure your official application reaches ZUS—either in person, via PUE ZUS, or the mObywatel app—starting July 1. This applies particularly to women born in the first half of 1966 and men born in the first half of 1961.
