Coordination at the G7 Summit
President Zelenskyy posted photographs on X from Tuesday’s meeting with Donald Trump during the G7 summit in Evian, France. He stated that coordinating positions remains essential.
Zelenskyy’s aides clarified that the leaders spoke during a broader session. The meeting included U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov.
The G7 morning session focused on Ukraine and included leaders from France, Japan, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom, and representatives of the European Union.
Trump Pushes for an Agreement
After the session, President Trump spoke to reporters about the necessity for Russia and Ukraine to reach an agreement. He noted that both nations have lost a staggering number of people.
Trump’s focus on the war with Iran had previously shifted attention from his efforts regarding Ukraine. Following a preliminary agreement with Tehran, the U.S. President declared he would do his utmost to help resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
When asked about his meeting with Zelenskyy, the U.S. President replied that he had already held a good conversation with him and would meet with him again later.
European Integration and Ongoing Conflict
On Monday, the European Union opened the first negotiating cluster with Ukraine, four years after the country was granted candidate status and two years after accession talks began. Ukraine filed its application to join the EU on February 28, 2022, four days after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
That same day, Zelenskyy called on G7 leaders for a decisive response to a wave of Russian attacks that killed at least 11 people. The shelling also ignited a fire at a historic Kyiv cathedral.
