A Kalashnikov Joke Leads to Fine and Flight Cancellation

A 41-year-old Polish citizen was blocked from his flight to Oslo and issued a fine after joking about carrying a weapon during check-in procedures at Warsaw Chopin Airport on June 14.

The incident at check-in

On June 14, at approximately 10:50 AM, special intervention units from the Warsaw-Okęcie Border Guard were alerted to a passenger at a check-in desk for a flight to Oslo. Upon arrival, officers began their investigation into the traveler’s behavior.

A misguided attempt at humor

During standard security questioning, the passenger was asked by staff if he was carrying any dangerous items. He replied that he did not have a small weapon, but rather a “Kalashnikov.” He immediately claimed it was just a joke.

Consequences of the false alarm

Officers isolated the man and conducted a thorough security sweep of his luggage; no prohibited items were found. However, for triggering an unjustified alarm and disrupting aviation security procedures, he was fined 500 PLN under the Aviation Law. The airline subsequently denied him boarding for his flight.
