Murder of Russian Critic in Biała Podlaska: Belarusian Detainees Released

Prosecutors have released two Belarusian nationals detained in the investigation into the killing of 44-year-old Russian cartoonist Robert K., who was fatally shot in Biała Podlaska on Monday, June 15.

Investigation Status

Intensive investigative work continues, with a comprehensive collection of forensic and digital evidence currently under analysis. Prosecutors are reviewing surveillance footage and witness testimonies to piece together the sequence of events.

Several investigative leads are being pursued simultaneously, though specific details regarding the strategy remain confidential. The two Belarusian citizens initially detained have been cleared of any connection to the crime.

State Terrorism Allegations

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has characterized the killing as a political assassination. He stated that if the act was commissioned by Russia, it would constitute an act of state terrorism with serious international implications.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the difficulty of the investigation, noting the challenges in identifying professional contract killers. Authorities are currently awaiting the preliminary results of the victim’s autopsy.

Victim Targeted for Anti-Putin Views

The victim, Robert K., was a political dissident known for his caricatures criticizing Vladimir Putin and the Russian regime. Both the police and the Internal Security Agency had previously offered the 44-year-old security protection.

The assailant approached the victim on a sidewalk around 9:30–9:45 AM on Monday and opened fire. Forensics confirmed seven gunshot wounds to the victim’s head, chest, and back. Police are calling for witnesses to come forward with any information.
