The U.S. Department of Defense has signaled openness to Poland’s proposal for a permanent American military base, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressing optimism about the swift and positive response.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz revealed that the Pentagon is open to Poland’s offer for a permanent U.S. military presence, noting that a final decision depends on specific agreements. He stated that the Department of Defense prioritizes engagement with key allies who fulfill their defense obligations.

The minister announced that preparations have begun, with efforts focused on logistical planning and dialogue with the American side. He has been tasked with coordinating these activities on behalf of the Polish government.

Tusk’s Reaction to U.S. Developments

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, speaking in Brussels, welcomed the letter from Secretary Hegseth regarding the potential base. While optimistic, he emphasized that the response does not guarantee the base’s establishment, as further details and agreements remain necessary.

Tusk praised the work of Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz, highlighting the concrete cooperation with U.S. generals and the Secretary that has moved the process forward. He stated that securing such a base would radically improve Poland’s sense of security.

Financial and Operational Timeline

Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski estimated the cost of building the base to be in the range of several to over a dozen billion zlotys. He asserted that the government is committed to funding the project to ensure national security.

The government aims to finalize discussions on the composition of the stationed troops within the next few weeks. Plans are reportedly in place to begin the construction of facilities for American soldiers before the end of the year.
