Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka Appointed as Deputy Minister of Defense

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz appointed Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka as the new Deputy Minister of Defense on Friday, June 19, tasking her with overseeing critical armaments procurement for the Polish Armed Forces.

New Leadership at the Ministry

The appointment was formalized by Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. In her new role, Sobkowiak-Czarnecka will be responsible for, among other duties, managing purchases for the Polish military.

Professional Background and Expertise

Between 2016 and 2018, Sobkowiak-Czarnecka worked at the European Commission, specializing in economic, defense, and space policy. Before her political career, she worked as a journalist reporting on national and international affairs.

From 2019 to 2023, she led Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz’s advisory team and served as his presidential campaign manager in 2020. On January 4, 2024, she was appointed Undersecretary of State for European Union affairs, where she managed preparations for Poland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. Starting in October 2025, she served as the Government Plenipotentiary for the Support for Ammunition Production (SAFE) instrument.

The Success of the SAFE Program

Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted Sobkowiak-Czarnecka’s instrumental role in the success of the Polish EU presidency and the development of the SAFE program. This initiative, proposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Brussels, marked the first time the European budget was used to finance the modernization and transformation of member state armies.

Securing Polish Interests in Brussels

The Ministry of Defense noted that Poland was the most ambitious country in implementing the EU’s SAFE program, securing full approval for a 44-billion-euro application. The Minister credited the new Deputy Minister with the challenging task of expanding the program’s scope and successfully securing significant funding for the Polish defense industry.
