Warsaw’s city hall is set to appoint a new supervisory board for Szpital Południowy on June 22, fulfilling a promise to remove active politicians from the hospital’s governance structure.

Board Appointments and Procedural Hurdles

The new board composition is expected to be finalized on Monday, June 22. According to Warsaw city hall, the board will exclude active politicians, consisting instead of administrative officials and experts with experience in the healthcare system. While the mayor approved the candidates on Friday, the process awaits final paperwork, including official criminal record certificates.

City Hall’s Strategy for Healthcare Oversight

Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski intends to implement similar standards across other municipal medical entities throughout June. The city presents these changes as a necessary step toward de-politicizing the oversight of public healthcare facilities, a move that follows calls from the medical council to strictly separate partisan influence from hospital management.

Scandal and Ongoing Investigations

The overhaul follows public reports of irregularities at Szpital Południowy, including allegations of preferential treatment for politicians and the existence of a “VIP lounge” for patients with political ties. Reports also highlighted concerns regarding the employment and remuneration of former SOR coordinator and local councilor Dawid Kacprzyk.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

The facility is currently under multiple investigations, including probes by the prosecutor’s office, the National Health Fund, the Warsaw city administration, and the National Labour Inspectorate. Previous management was removed by the outgoing board before the mayor decided to replace the board members themselves.
