Pathologist Accused of Desecrating Corpses Fights Pre-trial Detention

After being detained for the illegal disposal of human fetuses and medical waste in Lutoryż, pathologist Magdalena H. has filed an appeal against her three-month remand in custody.

The District Court in Rzeszów has ordered Magdalena H. to be held in pre-trial detention until September 10. The court cited the need to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation, citing risks of evidence tampering and the severity of the potential 12-year prison sentence. Prosecutors have charged her with desecrating human remains and illegally dumping hazardous medical waste.

Magdalena H. has appealed this decision, a process confirmed by the Rzeszów Regional Court on June 22. Her defense attorney, Patrycja Chobel, argues that the suspect’s thirty-year professional career and previously spotless reputation warrant her release under house arrest or police supervision.

Discovery in Lutoryż

The investigation centers on the June 10 discovery of human fetuses and medical waste on a private property in Lutoryż, Subcarpathian Voivodeship. An excavator operator alerted the police after uncovering the remains during site work, prompting an immediate investigation supported by local residents and property owners.

Police operations involved specialized K9 units and ground-penetrating radar to search the site. Officials reported that the soil was heavily contaminated with biological tissue and laboratory glass shards. By June 15, the Rzeszów Regional Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that a total of 34 fetuses or fetal fragments had been recovered.
