As a new heatwave approaches western Poland, meteorologists warn of surging temperatures through the week, raising questions about whether the nation’s historic June heat records are set to be broken.

Recent June Heat Extremes
The June temperature record was set only seven years ago in two locations. On June 26 and 30, 2019, Ceber in Lower Silesia recorded 38.3 degrees Celsius. The same temperature was noted on June 19 in Słubice, near Poland’s western border.
A slightly lower temperature of 38.2 degrees Celsius was registered in Radzyń on June 26, 2019. June 2019 remains the hottest June in recorded history globally and in Poland, with a temperature anomaly of 4.6 degrees Celsius above the multi-year norm.
Historical Records Stand Firm
Forecasts do not indicate that the all-time Polish heat record will be broken. That record has stood for 105 years: the highest temperature ever recorded in Poland was 40.2 degrees Celsius in the shade in Prószków, near Opole, on July 29, 1921.
On that same day, a 40-degree heat was registered in the village of Zbiersk between Konin and Kalisz, and 39.6 degrees Celsius in Pętkowo, Greater Poland. The felt temperature in Poznań at that time reached 38.7 degrees Celsius.
Meteorological Alerts and Safety Measures
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued second-degree heat warnings for three provinces in western Poland. The alerts cover parts of the Lubusz and Lower Silesian provinces and the western edges of the Greater Poland province, effective from Wednesday at 1:00 PM until Friday at 8:00 PM.
In these areas, temperatures are expected to reach 29 to 31 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, rising to 31 or 34 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Nighttime minimums will range between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius. The Government Security Centre advises avoiding direct sun exposure and maintaining high hydration levels.
The peak of the heatwave is expected at the turn of this week, with temperatures potentially reaching 35 to 40 degrees Celsius.
