15-Year-Old Boy Drowns in Zielonka Clay Pit

A 15-year-old Ukrainian boy drowned on Wednesday afternoon while swimming in an unsupervised clay pit in Zielonka, located in the Wołomin district, despite immediate rescue efforts by specialized diving teams.

The Incident in Zielonka

Around 3:10 PM, a tragic incident occurred at a clay pit in Zielonka. Three teenagers were swimming in the unsupervised reservoir, jumping from a pier before heading toward the center of the water. One boy began to struggle, and although a friend attempted to assist him, the teenager slipped beneath the surface.

Rescue Operation and Recovery

Emergency services, including firefighters and the Specialized Water and Diving Rescue Group from Warsaw, were deployed immediately. After nearly an hour of searching, a diver located the boy’s body and brought it to the shore. Rescuers confirmed his death at the scene.

Investigation and Safety Warnings

The two surviving teenagers were sober, and police are currently investigating the circumstances of the drowning under the supervision of a prosecutor. This incident follows a similar tragedy on Sunday in the Vistula River, where another 15-year-old Ukrainian citizen drowned.

Risks of Unsupervised Swimming

Authorities reiterate that swimming in unsupervised areas is extremely dangerous due to uneven bottoms, sudden depth changes, cold currents, and poor visibility. Since April 1, 60 people have drowned in Poland. Officials strongly advise the public to use only guarded swimming areas with professional lifeguards present.
