Drunk Driver Collides with Train in Bieniewice

A delivery van stalled on a level crossing in Bieniewice on Wednesday, June 24, resulting in a collision with a Kolei Mazowieckie train that halted rail traffic for over three hours.

The Collision Incident

On Wednesday, June 24, at approximately 11:33 a.m., a Kolei Mazowieckie train collided with a delivery van in Bieniewice, Warsaw-West County. The KM93810 train, traveling from Sochaczew to Mińsk Mazowiecki, struck an Iveco that had become stuck on the Purzyckiego Street level crossing.

Initial findings suggest the driver entered the crossing while the barriers were raised. The vehicle stalled on the tracks, could not be restarted or pushed to safety, and the driver was unable to alert the railway dispatcher or the train engineer in time.

Emergency Response and Safety

Following the impact, rail traffic on the R2 route between Warsaw and Sochaczew was completely blocked. Firefighters, emergency medical services, police, and PKP personnel were dispatched to the scene to secure the area and assess the situation.

While the delivery van sustained significant damage, the driver was uninjured as he had exited the vehicle before the collision occurred. Emergency responders also confirmed that none of the train passengers suffered any injuries.

Alcohol Test Results

Police officers conducted documentation and photographic evidence collection at the site. While the train engineer and conductor tested sober, the driver of the Iveco failed a breathalyzer test.

The test indicated approximately 0.34 promille of alcohol in the driver’s system. He will now face court proceedings regarding the offense of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Operational Disruptions

Rail operations were disrupted for more than three hours, causing residual delays and some cancellations even after service resumed. Kolei Mazowieckie tickets were honored on Warsaw Public Transport vehicles in zones 1 and 2 from 12:00 p.m. until further notice.

Authorities noted that a similar incident previously occurred at another level crossing in the vicinity.
