New residency restrictions for Ukrainian men
Denmark is tightening regulations for war refugees from Ukraine. Men aged 23 to 60 who are not exempt from military service will no longer be eligible for residency permits.
Morten Boedskov, the Minister of Immigration and Integration and former Minister of Defense, stated that avoiding military service undermines Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian attacks.
Scope of the Danish policy
As of early May, Denmark was home to 47,600 Ukrainians granted temporary residency under a 2022 special law, which provides rights to employment, education, and healthcare. The new restrictions will not apply retroactively, though Ukrainians must periodically apply for status extensions.
Ongoing monitoring of migration status
The government in Copenhagen has not ruled out further tightening of migration rules, emphasizing that the situation regarding Ukrainian immigrants will be monitored on an ongoing basis.
Denmark’s support for Ukraine
Denmark remains one of Ukraine’s primary allies. The Danish authorities were the first to invest in the Ukrainian defense industry and allowed for the establishment of a Ukrainian rocket fuel factory on Danish soil.
