Serbian Prosecutors Pledge Cooperation in Romanowski Case

Polish Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek announced on June 26 that Serbian authorities have pledged to cooperate in locating former deputy minister Marcin Romanowski, who faces serious corruption allegations regarding the Justice Fund.

Diplomatic assurances from Belgrade

Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek confirmed on Friday, June 26, that he held an online meeting with the Prosecutor General of Serbia. While Serbian officials could not immediately confirm Romanowski’s presence in the country, they committed to full cooperation regarding the investigation.

Criminal allegations against Romanowski

Former deputy justice minister Marcin Romanowski is the subject of an active investigation concerning irregularities within the Justice Fund. Prosecutors have leveled charges against him, including participation in an organized criminal group and rigging public tenders funded by the institution.

International legal status

A court ordered Romanowski’s arrest in early December 2024 following the Justice Fund probe. A European Arrest Warrant (EAW) was issued for him on December 19, 2024, the same day it was reported that he had received protection in Hungary.

Hungarian policy shift

During the spring 2026 election campaign, current Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar pledged that his administration would not provide shelter or asylum to international criminals. Magyar has repeatedly stated that Hungary would not serve as a safe haven for individuals wanted by the international community.

Romanowski’s response

Following reports of his protection in Hungary, Romanowski claimed his activities were a fight against lawlessness. After Magyar was sworn in as Prime Minister, Romanowski released a video online from an undisclosed location, providing no information regarding his current whereabouts.
