Medvedev Threatens to Seize Belweder Palace Following Polish Lawsuit

In retaliation for Poland’s lawsuit demanding the return of a former Russian consulate building in Gdańsk, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has baselessly called for the seizure of the Belweder Palace in Warsaw.

Poland Demands Return of Property

On June 12, the Polish General Prosecutor’s Office filed a lawsuit with the District Court in Gdańsk regarding a property on Batory Street. Poland is seeking the recovery of the facility formerly occupied by a Russian consulate, as Russian representatives failed to vacate the premises by the December 2025 deadline.

The legal dispute intensified after Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski revoked consent for the Russian facility’s operations, a decision taken in response to sabotage activities attributed to Russia.

Medvedev’s Historical Revisionism

Responding to the legal action, Medvedev suggested that Russia should file its own lawsuit to seize the Belweder Palace. Citing the TASS news agency, he claimed the residence was built with funds from the Russian Tsarist treasury and currently remains in the illegal possession of the Republic of Poland.

Medvedev’s argument rests on the history of the site, specifically its 1818 purchase by the authorities of the Kingdom of Poland to house Grand Duke Constantine, brother of Tsar Alexander I. Despite his rhetoric, there is no indication that Russia intends to initiate formal legal proceedings regarding the palace.

Historical Significance of Belweder

The Belweder Palace is deeply ingrained in Polish history, having served as a residence for Józef Piłsudski, Gabriel Narutowicz, and Stanisław Wojciechowski after Poland regained independence. Following 1989, it was used by Wojciech Jaruzelski and Lech Wałęsa.

Currently, the palace remains one of the official residences of the President of the Republic of Poland.
