Travel Discounts and Public Transport
Every retiree and pensioner is entitled to a 37 percent statutory discount on two PKP train journeys per year. Once over 60, seniors can purchase a “Senior Ticket” with discounts of up to 35 percent from most carriers.
In cities like Warsaw, Poznań, and Gdańsk, public transport is free for those over 70. Warsaw residents aged 65 plus can purchase an annual pass for 50 PLN, while Szczecin offers 50 percent discounts for women starting at age 55 and men at age 60.
Employment Limits and Pension Adjustments
As of June 1, 2026, ZUS has set new income limits for those drawing early pensions or disability benefits. You may earn up to 6,694.10 PLN gross monthly without penalty, but exceeding 12,431.90 PLN gross results in a full suspension of benefits.
These limits do not apply to individuals who have reached the universal retirement age of 60 for women and 65 for men. Those who deferred their pension application until July or August 2026 stand to benefit from a nearly 10 percent increase in their initial calculation due to recent capital revaluation.
Healthcare and Financial Support Programs
The “Free Medicines 65+” program provides access to subsidized drugs from the Ministry of Health list. Following the March indexation, the lowest pension is now 1,978.49 PLN gross, and the nursing allowance for those over 75 has risen to 366.67 PLN monthly.
Municipalities also manage the “Senior Support Corps,” which offers free SOS safety wristbands for elderly residents living alone.
Cultural Benefits and Tax Exemptions
Seniors can access museums, theaters, and cinemas with discounts ranging from 20 to 50 percent, with many institutions offering free admission on specific days. Additionally, retirees receive a 50 percent discount on passport fees, and those whose pension does not exceed half the national average wage are exempt from TV and radio license fees.
The tax system offers further relief, with a 30,000 PLN annual tax-free allowance. Furthermore, the “PIT-0 for working seniors” program allows those who delay drawing their pension to earn up to 85,528 PLN annually without income tax.
Accessing Benefits Through Technology
Physical pension cards are no longer the only way to claim discounts. The mObywatel application allows users to display their digital ID (mLegitymacja) at ticket counters or on trains. Additionally, the National Senior Card provides instant discounts between 3 and 20 percent at thousands of private establishments, including hotels and spas.
