Zelensky Presses Zaluzhny to Abandon Presidential Ambitions

Amid speculation over potential autumn elections, President Zelensky summoned Ukraine’s ambassador to London, Valerii Zaluzhny, to Kyiv to discuss the risks of a domestic political rivalry and its impact on national unity.

The London Context

According to Ukrainska Pravda, the initial purpose of General Zaluzhny’s visit to Kyiv involved discussions regarding the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. As Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK, Zaluzhny reviewed the potential consequences of this political shift for Ukrainian-British relations with the president.

Electoral Risks and Rivalry

The conversation eventually turned to the possibility of holding presidential elections this autumn. President Zelensky noted that while the front line remains stable and society is sufficiently unified, holding an election carries the risk of internal division. He emphasized the necessity of avoiding a competitive campaign between himself and the general.

Zaluzhny’s Political Stance

When asked directly if he intended to run, Zaluzhny confirmed his plans. Although the president’s office indicated a willingness to discuss alternative diplomatic or high-level government roles, the general maintained that he has never sought a political career but feels a moral obligation to the citizens who place their trust in him.

Pressure from the Presidential Administration

During his stay in Kyiv, Zaluzhny met with Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and parliamentary faction leader Davyd Arakhamia. These officials repeated the president’s arguments regarding the dangers of a divisive campaign, yet the general’s position remained unchanged. Public opinion polls currently place Zaluzhny at 73 percent trust, followed by Kyrylo Budanov at 70 percent, and Zelensky at 61 percent.
