Law and Justice Proposes Independent Commission to Investigate Hospital South Scandal

Following reports of administrative corruption and patient mistreatment at Warsaw’s Southern Hospital, Jarosław Kaczyński has announced plans to establish a non-political, independent commission to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the facility.

The Proposed Commission

Jarosław Kaczyński announced a draft bill for an independent commission of social trust, distinct from traditional investigative committees. The body would consist of 15 members, primarily selected from medical professional organizations rather than political ranks, to ensure it remains completely apolitical.

The commission would possess broad authority to access medical documentation and would not be subordinate to any state organ. Kaczyński indicated the mandate would focus on uncovering the truth behind events at the Southern Hospital and other facilities, expressing a desire for the investigation to conclude expeditiously.

Allegations of Malpractice

The proposal follows reports that the Southern Hospital facilitated a funeral business, where morgue staff allegedly directed grieving families to specific funeral homes and published graphic images of human remains. Kaczyński described these incidents as evidence of a radical cultural deficit and a total lack of empathy.

Przemysław Czarnek, the Law and Justice candidate for prime minister, characterized the management of the hospital’s emergency department as pure theft and pathological. He argued that an inquiry led by current political rivals would be a mockery, necessitating this independent approach to ensure accountability.

Tensions During Press Conference

The press conference grew heated when journalists questioned the impartiality of the proposed commission and brought up past controversies, including a 2018 incident involving the delivery of orthopedic crutches to the Law and Justice chairman. Party spokesperson Rafał Bochenek and Czarnek dismissed these questions as mocking, labeling them inappropriate for matters of such high importance.

The controversy surrounding the hospital centers on Dawid Kacprzyk, a former coordinator of the emergency department and a city councilor. Reports allege he earned nearly 1.6 million PLN annually by working excessive hours and created an unofficial admission path for political associates. Following these revelations, Kacprzyk resigned his positions, and local authorities dismissed the hospital’s management board.
