Kaczyński Proposes “Apolitical” Commission to Investigate Southern Hospital Irregularities

PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński has unveiled plans for an independent, non-partisan commission to investigate alleged systemic mismanagement and ethical breaches at the Southern Hospital in Warsaw.

The Proposed Independent Commission

Jarosław Kaczyński announced a draft law to establish a social trust commission, distinct from any existing political body. Comprised of 15 members, including legal experts and medical professionals, the commission is intended to operate independently of state institutions to investigate irregularities in the healthcare sector.

The commission would possess broad authority to access medical documentation and investigate broader systemic failures within the public health system. Kaczyński emphasized that the body aims to address not only potential criminal activity but also profound cultural deficits and a lack of empathy within medical facilities.

Allegations of Mismanagement and Ethical Breaches

Reports suggest the Southern Hospital was used for a “funeral business,” where hospital staff allegedly directed families to specific funeral homes. Allegations have also surfaced regarding the sharing of graphic images of deceased patients, further highlighting claims of a systemic lack of empathy in hospital administration.

PiS candidate for Prime Minister, Przemysław Czarnek, described the situation as “theft in its purest form,” asserting that the current management of the Emergency Department led to unprecedented pathology. Czarnek dismissed the possibility of a standard parliamentary committee investigation, arguing that political influence would render such an inquiry a mockery.

The Controversy Surrounding Dawid Kacprzyk

The scandal centers on Dawid Kacprzyk, a former coordinator of the Emergency Department at the Southern Hospital, whose financial gains and administrative practices have come under scrutiny. Reports indicate he earned nearly 1.6 million PLN in a single year while working an average of 331 hours per month.

Further investigations revealed allegations that Kacprzyk created an unofficial admission path for Civic Coalition (KO) politicians and their families. Following these revelations, Kacprzyk resigned from his council mandate and political party membership, while hospital authorities terminated his contract and replaced the facility’s management board.
