Prosecutors Drop Investigation into Autopsy Photos at South Hospital

Warsaw prosecutors have declined to open an investigation into the publication of autopsy photos by a South Hospital morgue coordinator, concluding no laws were broken or patient privacy violated.

Case Overview and Allegations

The South Hospital recently addressed reports concerning irregularities in its morgue. Allegations included the promotion of a funeral home linked to the coordinator, the unauthorized use of the morgue as a film set, and the sharing of graphic photos of human remains on social media.

The hospital’s current management confirmed that their predecessors had filed two criminal complaints: one regarding a bugging device found in the facility and another concerning the breach of medical confidentiality via social media posts.

Prosecutorial Findings on Privacy and Surveillance

The investigation into the alleged bugging device was closed after forensic examination confirmed the device contained no recordings and was not used to capture confidential information. Prosecutors also declined to pursue the case regarding autopsy photos.

Officials determined the images did not violate medical confidentiality as they were unidentifiable. Furthermore, they found no intent to desecrate human remains, arguing the posts aimed to promote thanatological education and support families by demystifying the death process.

Funeral Home Practices and Ongoing Investigations

Prosecutors investigated allegations that the facility pressured families to choose a specific funeral home, but found no evidence to support these claims after questioning witnesses.

A separate, active investigation continues regarding the alleged forgery of 20 death certificates, involving the unauthorized use of the coordinator’s official seal and signature. In total, 32 separate cases concerning the hospital’s operations are currently being monitored.
