90-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed by Garbage Truck in Żoliborz

A 90-year-old man died in the hospital after being struck and run over by a garbage truck while walking near his apartment building on Przaspaska Street in Warsaw on June 30.

Fatal Accident on Przaspaska Street

On Tuesday, June 30, at approximately 5:00 PM, a tragic accident occurred at 16B Przaspaska Street in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district. A garbage truck struck and knocked down a 90-year-old pedestrian, subsequently running over his legs. The senior was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he died during the night despite medical intervention.

Sub-inspector Elwira Kozłowska, press officer for the Warsaw V District Police, confirmed that the man succumbed to his severe injuries after being admitted to the hospital.

Circumstances of the Incident

The victim was reportedly navigating around the stationary garbage truck while using a cane. According to accounts from the victim’s family, the man had intended to go out with his granddaughter when the truck blocked his path from the building. While the granddaughter returned briefly for his walker, the man attempted to walk around the front of the vehicle cabin.

The driver of the garbage truck, who was found to be sober, moved the vehicle forward while the pedestrian was in his path. Reports suggest that while the truck was equipped with an additional mirror above the windshield, the driver failed to notice the man in front of the vehicle.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are investigating the exact sequence of events, with potential footage from the truck’s windshield camera being analyzed as evidence. The police secured the scene, and further investigations are currently being conducted under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office.
